@JesseDornfeld @men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 @DrMichaelLBrown The ‘If’ at the start of the sentence is important in positioning the second part too.

@JesseDornfeld @men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 Interestingly, and I know this is not an authoritative source, the Douay-Rheims Challoner Revision 1752 flips the sense completely, to avoid offence, I guess. “If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.” Job 9:23 DRC1752

@JesseDornfeld @men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 Matthew Henry has an interesting and somewhat satisfying answer to Job 9:23. God knows the ultimate end to any trial, it’s purpose for good. Modern translator choices are so confusing at times. The KJV seems to make much more sense to even the modern English language reader. t.co/vCYwjB007…

@men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 Yes, indeed - that is why I believe he remains blameless. There’s so much in this book! 🤯

@men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 (Don’t feel under any obligation to respond to any of this; I’m kind of thinking out loud at this stage). Plan is to split my study into 4 parts and go back on myself a few times in more detail…

@men_like_trees @AndrewS76825037 Job 9:23. Wow! I think Job speaks with uncharacteristic anger or frustration here. God’s rebuke that is to come at Job 38:1-3 surely speaks to him as much as the others. Job is reconciled and still blameless - God in His wisdom understands why Job feels as he did, but… 🔥🔥🔥

Genesis 1:21 The fifth day. buff.ly/3r4YoIc t.co/oKsIQrWC9…

@men_like_trees That is a very good point and one I will take as a lens for the rest of the book. Throughout the Bible - NT and OT - Job is held up as one of the very few truly blameless people to have walked the earth, so anything that contradicts that must be suspect.

@men_like_trees I’d be interested in your opinion on a date for Job, given direct quotes of Psalms & Isaiah. The v. early dating of Job seems part based on infrequent use of YHWH, but that could be due to Job being written to be out of time & place, rather than just to Jews of a specific time.

@men_like_trees Someone speaking on behalf of God but from a man-based perspective - and without his authority. A bit like a ‘mansplainer’ who intercedes without invitation and adds no new value of their own.

@men_like_trees I’m taking Job slowly. But here’s a hypothesis. Elihu is rated no more than any of Job’s other friends. Is he a God-splainer? It could be a few days till I work through the text in detail. I’ll come back to this then.

@men_like_trees What a lovely photo Kevin. I hope you all had a good day.

@JesseDornfeld Happy day! Glad you had a good one!

@Carpet16100850 @thescottbarber 👍🏻 Yes, we’re good here. I hope you are ok too.
